Devil Anse Hatfield
William Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield was the family patriarch of the Hatfield clan during the famous Hatfield-McCoy feud. He was born on September 9, 1939 in what is now Logan, West Virginia, and died of pneumonia January 6, 1921 in Sarah Ann West Virginia. It is said he gained his nickname as a result of his exploits in the Civil War as a confederate soldier. It may also be in contrast to his cousin Anderson "Preacher Anse" Hatfield. Never-the-less he confessed Christ and was baptized in 1911. Hatfield married Levisa "Levicy" Chafin in 1861 and had 13 children. The notorious Hatfield/McCoy feud didn’t end until 1891.“Devil Anse” has been portrayed on TV, first on a 1975 TV movie, “The Hatfields and the McCoys”, and in a 2012 miniseries (Hatfields and McCoys).
