JAMES CUNNINGHAM
father of Edward Cunningham
from the 1997 book
THE DESCENDANTS OF EDWARD CUNNINGHAM

revised 2016

The son of Hugh and Agnes Cunningham, James CUNNINGHAM was born August 28, 1766 in Lancaster Co. PA (now Dauphin County). He married Margaret WINNING (sometimes shown as WINAN) on September 22, 1797  in Berkeley County, Virginia (now West Virginia) with John Boyd presiding.  Margaret, the daughter of James WINNING and Jane (ROBELL?) was born about 1768 in VA or NJ. The best information available to me in 1997 indicated that Margaret died in 1818 in Washington County PA. A bio of Lieutellus Cunningham (great grandson of James) in "Cole County People" (Missouri) indicates that Margaret died February 20, 1810.  This same source states that James did not remarry until after moving to Bellaire Ohio in 1824. This creates a problem as census records for Edward seem to confirm a birth year of 1818, or less likely, 1819.

James moved to Washington County PA in 1810, purchasing land from his brother John in "Horseshoe Bottom" in present day Donora PA. My 1997 version of this book stated that James remarried in 1819 while still in Washington County PA although the woman's name is uncertain. Some researchers indicate "Jane" - last name unknown, or "Elizabeth Gibson" in one printed source, for which I can find no confirmation. The aforementioned bio of Lieutellus says the James married Nancy McGrew after moving to Bellaire OH. Again, I have found no other source to confirm this.

James moved to Belmont County OH in 1827 (Lieutellus bio says 1824) and resided there until his death. James died July 25, 1841 in Belmont County, Ohio.  He was  buried at the  Key Cemetery (Bethel Presbyterian Church in Mead Twp). The stone no longer exists.  His second wife does not appear in her husband's will and it is assumed she had died previous to James. Family information indicates one daughter and five sons by Margaret. There were three sons and one daughter by his second wife.
